Part 1: Opportunity
My name is Ashley Whitley and I’m a junior at high tech high north county. Ever since elementary school my best subject has been math, sometimes it can be really difficult and a lot of hard work but math is still my best subject now. Science comes as a close second, I especially love biology. My junior internship this year is at a coral research lab in San Diego. I’m especially excited about this because I love learning about new things, I think it’s going to be an amazing experience. My first job was a swim teacher at a pool in Oceanside, I taught kids how to swim from ages 2-11. From this job I learned a lot about patience and leadership. Working with 3 year olds can be very challenging especially if they don’t want to listen, that’s when I had to be patient with them. I would often teach the older kids in groups and this was also difficult because they didn’t want to listen or try hard to make their swim intervals. When this happened I had to be the leader of the group.
Reach School:
I first Visited Chapman University for college day with my advisory. After the tour I knew for a fact that I wanted to apply, it automatically seemed like the perfect fit for me. I have been going to a small school for the past 11 years and I have grown accustom to how intimate they are. Chapman is also a pretty school too. I love the area it’s in because It’s far enough away from home but I’m still in a great part of California. Another good part about Chapman is their swim, I would to swim in college and Chapman has a team that I could join. This is a reach school for me because its so competitive and really expensive.
Wheelhouse School:
I was born and spent most of my childhood in Tacoma, WA. I fall in love with the city every time I go back to visit my family. Most of my cousins went to UW tacoma and I would also love to go there. It would be a good fit for me because it’s so close to a majority of my family but also a totally different environment than what I’m used to here in San Diego. This school is also pretty small, but theres another campus in Seattle which is also really nice.
Safety School:
My safety school is SDSU. I like SDSU because its still in beautiful San Diego, also because it’s pretty close to home but far enough for me to have some freedom. The lab that I’m working at for internship is located at SDSU so it’ll be nice to be familiar with the campus and also have some connections.
Major 1: Nursing
Nursing interest me because I want to help people. Nurses also have a lot of freedom, you can work in so many different places. You can work in the hospital, or in the military, or so many other places. Nursing jobs are always in demand and I think it’s something that i’ll be very good at.
Potential Career
Major 2: Forensic Science
I love science and I think it would be so cool to investigate so many different things. Plus forensic scientist also help people. This major would be a lot of fun and a good fit for me.
Potential Career
Major 3: Pathology
When I was little I used to want to be a doctor. Now i don’t think that it would be a good fit for me. I like pathology because it’s the study of different diseases. I would still be able to help people and their health and study the human body.
